The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:

"National AccessAbility Week is May 28 to June 3. This week is an opportunity to celebrate the individuals, organizations and communities working to remove barriers; helping to build a more accessible and inclusive future for all.

Durham Region is committed to creating welcoming communities that work toward creating equal opportunities for people of all abilities; we strive to make our workplaces, services and communities accessible to everyone.

This important work is guided by the Region’s dedicated staff and the Accessibility Advisory Committee. Their continued leadership helps us build an inclusive Region where accessibility is embedded into the work we do, from start to finish, in a sustainable way.

This week and beyond, I encourage you to learn about the issues and barriers to disability, accessibility and inclusion, and how we—individually or collectively—can work to make our communities more inclusive places to live, work, play and call home.

Durham Region has proclaimed this week as National AccessAbility Week, and in recognition, the AccessAbility flag will be raised at Regional Headquarters on May 29 at 2 p.m.

More information on how Durham Region is recognizing National AccessAbility Week is available at durham.ca/accessibility."
