Eligible residents can receive money for their child’s post-secondary education through the Canada Learning Bond. This Government of Canada benefit will deposit up to $2,000 into a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP), helping households with a modest income grow their child’s education savings.

For help accessing the Canada Learning Bond, the Region of Durham welcomes eligible households to attend sign-up events. A $25 grocery gift card will be given to the first 40 households in attendance at each event on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • To qualify for the Canada Learning Bond, the child must be born in 2004 or later, the child must be a resident of Canada, and the adjusted household income must be modest (a modest adjusted income is up to $53,359 for households with one to three children).
  • An RESP is required to receive the Canada Learning Bond, but no household financial contribution is necessary. Assistance with opening an RESP will be available at the event; please bring Social Insurance Numbers (SIN) and valid identifications (ID) for both the parent/guardian/caregiver and child. Valid ID can include photo ID for the parent/guardian/caregiver (excluding health cards) and a birth certificate for the child.
  • Service Canada will be on site to issue SINs to those who need them. To be issued a SIN, please bring a primary identity document (e.g., Birth Certificate, Certificate of Canadian Citizenship, etc.) and a secondary identity document (e.g., a passport, or provincial or territorial identification).
