The Ontario government has announced provincial disaster recovery funding for the municipalities that experienced the May 2022 derecho that moved across southern Ontario with winds up to 195 km/hr. The Township of Uxbridge was left with extensive property and infrastructure damage, months’ worth of recovery, and rendered numerous homes inhabitable and at least 9,000 homes without power.

Uxbridge has been advised by the province the Township will receive up to $881,000, to provide financial support for operating and capital costs associated with this disaster. This goes a long way to covering our total losses of approximately $1.1M.

“The provincial funding is essential for the municipality to recover costs while not carrying a deficit budget”. Mayor Dave Barton said, “The Township applauds the provincial government for the Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance Program to support municipalities when extreme weather emergencies hit.  Thank you to Premier Ford, Minister Clark, and our MPP, Minister Bethlenfalvy for their ongoing support.”

As the Trail Capital of Canada, our natural spaces are essential to our community health and well-being.  Recovery will continue as we plant trees and rehabilitate our spaces.  Future budgets will consider further recovery efforts to restore our tree canopy and ensure we are better prepared for weather emergencies in the future.
