September 30th is National Day of Truth & Reconciliation, a commemorative day that honours the Survivors and the children lost to residential schools, their families, and communities.

Between 1831-1998, the federal government operated 140 Indian Residential Schools in Canada, with the last school closing a mere 23 years ago. Survivors advocated for the proper acknowledgement, reparations and demanded accountability. With such, the Federal Government has put forth various agreements, commissions, and apologies as a means to heal their relationship with the Indigenous community.

An abundance of resources are available to help Canadians learn more about the deep seated history of residential schools in Canada, and its long-lasting impact.

The Township of Uxbridge is located on the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee, Mississauga, and Chippewa. We acknowledge that these lands are covered under the Williams Treaties and are home to many Indigenous communities. The Township honours, recognizes, and respects Indigenous Peoples as the traditional stewards of the lands and waters which we mutually enjoy today.
