Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“Today (August 1), we recognize Emancipation Day—a pivotal moment in history when the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect in 1834, ending the enslavement of people of African descent across Canada.
This day is both a celebration of freedom and a solemn reminder of the painful legacy of the transatlantic slave trade. It is a moment to reflect on our shared history, honour those who fought for change and envision a more equitable future for all.
While progress has been made, the journey toward dismantling oppressive systems and eliminating anti-Black racism continues.
The Region—along with community partners—held an Emancipation Day celebration this week on July 30 in Pickering with the theme Rooted in Resilience: Embracing Empowerment. This family-friendly event provided a space for residents to connect and learn about emancipation. It included live performances from vocalists, spoken word artists and steel pan players; food trucks; vendors; children’s activities and so much more.
To honour the legacy of those who paved the way for freedom and to reaffirm our commitment to equity and inclusion, the Pan-African flag will fly at Regional Headquarters until August 5.”
