At approximately 7:35 p.m. on November 16, members of the Uxbridge Fire Department were on scene responding to a collision on Wagg Road near Highway 47 when an SUV struck three firefighters who were actively assisting at the site. All three firefighters were transported to hospital with serious injuries and are currently in stable condition. One firefighter was treated and released from hospital early this morning, while the other two remain in hospital.
“Every time our firefighters respond to a collision or emergency on the road, they face real and serious risks,” stated Mike MacDonald, Fire Chief of the Uxbridge Fire Department. “Even with lights, sirens, and safety protocols, the dangers are very real. We are fortunate that our firefighters were not more seriously injured in this incident. I ask everyone to slow down, drive according to the road conditions, and pay close attention whenever approaching an accident scene. Your caution can make the difference between life and injury for first responders and the people they are helping.”
We extend our sincere gratitude to all responding emergency personnel for their prompt actions, and to the community for the concern, compassion, and support shown to our injured firefighters and their families.
“Last night Uxbridge came far too close to a tragedy,” said Dave Barton, Mayor of the Township of Uxbridge. “Thank you to the Uxbridge Fire team, DRPS, RDPS, Ornge and every responder working in these extremely hazardous conditions. We must all be more cautious when driving around active first responders who are working to keep us safe. I urge everyone to slow down and stay alert. Protecting those who protect us starts with each of us taking responsibility behind the wheel.”
