Following recent restoration work and in recognition of its long-standing significance in the community, the Township of Uxbridge has nominated the Uxbridge Public Library Clock in Municipal World’s Great Canadian Landmark Contest.

The Uxbridge Public Library, built in 1887 and funded by Uxbridge-born businessman and politician Joseph Gould, is one of the community’s most historic and well-known landmarks. It continues to serve residents and stands as a symbol of Uxbridge’s heritage and identity.

To celebrate the building’s importance and the recent improvements made to it, the Township is encouraging community members to show their support by voting in the contest.

Recent restoration work included the repair and replacement of worn components in the original 1887 clock, which was purchased from Seth Thomas Clocks and Movements for $315. Although the clock’s hands and mechanical systems required attention, the internal mechanism remained functional and has continued to keep time.

The Millennial Chimes, first installed in 1999 following a successful $25,000 community fundraising campaign, have also been replaced with a new carillon system. This improvement was made possible by a generous anonymous donation received in 2025, which was provided once the clock restoration was complete. The same technician who installed the original chimes returned to install the new system.

A public event to recognize the recent upgrades to the Uxbridge Public Library will be announced in the coming weeks.
