Mayor Dave’s Q&A Video

Mayor Dave's January Newsletter Video

This month’s edition includes information on upcoming events and recreation programs, along with a look back at 2025 accomplishments and more!

Updates from Council

Mayor, Dave Barton:

I’d love to hear from you! If you have questions about local issues, upcoming events, or anything else on your mind, send them my way. Just email mayor@uxbridge.ca with the subject line "Mayor's Q&A." If your question is for a specific councillor, I'm happy to have them join the next video segment as well! I’ll be answering selected questions in a video next month. Looking forward to your submissions. Let’s keep the conversation going!

Regional Councillor, Bruce Garrod:

As we enter the final year of this term of Council, I am looking forward to continuing to represent Uxbridge at Durham Region, alongside my role as Deputy Mayor. The year is already off to a busy start, both locally and at the Regional level.

Food insecurity, while not a Regional responsibility, was a major concern highlighted through the Social Services survey I conducted. In January, Council joined the team at St. Andrew’s Church to assist with their monthly soup lunch. This was followed by bringing together key stakeholders from Loaves and Fishes and Feed the Need Durham to encourage exploration of opportunities to enhance cross-organizational collaboration.

The annual Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) conference proved to be a worthwhile investment of time. We had the rare opportunity to meet with nine individual Provincial Ministers and their associates. Maintaining and strengthening these relationships has been instrumental in supporting a number of our grant applications.

Important discussions were also held with the Homelessness Management team within Regional Social Services to better understand the findings of their recent point-in-time count and how those learnings can best be applied within Uxbridge Township.

Finally, it has been a busy period with the two Conservation Authorities I represent, including my selection as Vice-Chair of CLOCA. Discussions continue around Provincial initiatives to consolidate Ontario’s 36 Conservation Authorities in an effort to establish greater consistency in processes.

Ward 1 Councillor, Pam Beach:

2026 is off to a busy start! I hope everyone had some restful downtime over the winter break.

Don’t miss the Goodwood Public School fundraising spaghetti dinner on January 30, from 4:30–7:30 p.m. at Goodwood Hall. Tickets available through SchoolCash Online or by payment at the school, $15 for adults, $10 for students, preschoolers by donation. All proceeds will go toward new playground equipment for the school.

Stay warm, drive safe, and take your time!

Ward 2 Councillor, Gord Shreeve:

As this first edition for 2026 reaches your email, I would like to begin by thanking you for your interest in receiving the latest news on events and projects happening throughout Ward 2.

On a snowy January 16th evening, the Zephyr Lions Club hosted a very well attended Spaghetti Dinner at the Community Centre. Regional Councillor, Bruce Garrod joined guests for dinner, meeting residents and taking the time to answer questions. Thank you, Councillor Garrod!

The Udora Leaskdale Lions Club is serving a Spaghetti Dinner at the Udora Hall this evening January 30th from 5:30-7:30 p.m., adults-$15; children ages 5-12, $5. The Udora Leaskdale Lions recently partnered with the Uxbridge and Zephyr Lions to present a cheque for $3,000 to the Uxbridge Hospital Foundation. Great work, Lions😊

Zephyr Community Association members are working hard and planning a Valentine's Day Dance:

Ward 3 Councillor, Zed Pickering:

Winter is in full swing and there’s plenty to enjoy! The Uxbridge Music Hall has a great lineup of concerts, theatre, and community productions this season. Visit the Uxbridge Music Hall’s Event Calendar to see what’s coming up and get your tickets.

Stay active with community skate times at the Uxbridge Arena! Drop-in public skate and themed skates are offered throughout the season. Check the arena’s public skate schedule here: Skating and Shinny - Township of Uxbridge.

A big thank you to all the crews and volunteers out keeping our local trails in great shape for snowy winter hikes. Your efforts help make our community trails welcoming all season long.

And just a friendly reminder about winter parking regulations. Please avoid on-street parking between 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., November 1 to April 1, and follow posted signs so our snow crews can clear roads safely and efficiently. You can read the full winter parking rules here: Parking - Township of Uxbridge

Shifting away from winter talk, some members of council and I attended a very successful ROMA (Rural Ontario Municipal Association) Conference, where valuable knowledge was gained through educational sessions and strong delegations were held with provincial ministers. These meetings provided an important opportunity to advocate directly for support on key priorities and projects that matter to our township.

A very busy, snowy January. I look forward to all that February brings for Ward 3 and beyond.

Ward 4 Councillor, Willie Popp:

We’re right back in the swing of things with board and committee meetings. At the first BIA board meeting of 2026, we welcomed a member of DRPS who discussed two initiatives working to support businesses. The first, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), is a proactive crime-prevention strategy that uses environmental design to reduce opportunities for crime. The second program, CAMSafe, is a voluntary security camera registry that helps police identify the locations of residential and commercial cameras during investigations, strengthening collaboration between the public and police to resolve incidents more efficiently. It was great to hear how DRPS works to support and help protect our business community.

With all the snow we have been receiving over the last month, I want to give a huge shout-out and thank you to our Public Works team for all their hard work and dedication. This winter maintenance season alone, they have worked double the number of hours compared to years prior. Here’s the breakdown:

  • 2023/2024       Winter Season: 2,276.15 hours
  • 2024/2025       Winter Season: 2,745.76 hours
  • 2025/2026       Winter Season: 5,290.05 hours

With warmer days ahead, I'm happy to let you know that plans for Canada Day are already underway. I look forward to another fun-filled event; stay tuned for more information to come regarding what’s in store this year!

Ward 5 Councillor, Todd Snooks:

The winter weather has certainly made an impact on Uxbridge in the early start of 2026! Please keep your sidewalks and fire hydrants clear and be careful backing out of your driveways with snow piles limiting your visual field and making it that much harder for drivers and pedestrians to see one another. Hoping to see a little reprieve from the snow, ice, and frigid temperatures soon!

Coming soon in Ward 5 is the Uxbridge Winter Farmers Market – a great place to get out of the cold and get your local produce, meats, artisan items, etc. Starting Sunday February 15, 2026, and running every other Sunday until April 12, 2026, (10 a.m. to 3p.m.) in the Uxbridge Arena Community Room – hope to see you there!

2025 Accomplishments

In 2025, we achieved a lot! Watch our 2025 Accomplishment Review Video or visit our website to see all the highlights.

Snow Removal and Safety Reminders

With the recent snow accumulation, we’d like to remind residents of a few important safety measures:

Sidewalks and Roofs:
All snow, slush, and ice must be cleared from sidewalks next to your property and from roofs overhanging sidewalks within 24 hours of snowfall.

Hydrant Access:
The Region of Durham maintains fire hydrants, but they may not be cleared immediately after heavy snowfall. Take a moment to remove snow from around hydrants near your property. Keeping them visible and accessible can save firefighters valuable time in an emergency. Every second matters.

Children’s Safety:
Please ensure children stay off or away from snowy roadsides. Play safely this winter and avoid roads when our crews are working.
