Mayor Dave’s Q&A Video |
|
This month, Mayor Dave chats with Councillor Willie Popp to share their appreciation for another successful Santa Claus Parade. He also takes time to discuss road safety and answer questions from the community.

Updates from Council |
|
Mayor, Dave Barton:
I’d love to hear from you! If you have questions about local issues, upcoming events, or anything else on your mind, send them my way. Just email mayor@uxbridge.ca with the subject line "Mayor's Q&A." If your question is for a specific councillor, I'm happy to have them join the next video segment as well! I’ll be answering selected questions in a video next month. Looking forward to your submissions. Let’s keep the conversation going!
Regional Councillor, Bruce Garrod:
Regional taxation continues to be a key concern for many residents, especially as nearly 60% of Uxbridge property taxes flow to Durham Region. In the current draft budget, almost half of the proposed increase is allocated to Durham Regional Police Services. Challenges such as vehicle theft, human trafficking, gang activity, and cyber-crime are putting pressure on policing resources across the Region, and responding effectively comes at a high cost. As Regional Council debates these levy changes, I remain focused on ensuring Uxbridge continues to receive record-level return on our property tax investment.
Last week I received the long-awaited point-in-time homelessness count report. I will be sharing more soon about how this data aligns with the social services review I initiated last year and how it can help guide decisions on which Social Services supports should be prioritized for Uxbridge residents.
Additionally, there are important service improvements underway with the Region’s 311 system. While 311 is already well established as the central point of contact for operational concerns, the service now connects residents with broader supports including assistance for at-risk seniors, family counselling, homelessness services, and addiction programs. For those who prefer email, a single consolidated address, 311@durham.ca, has replaced more than 50 former contact points. Looking ahead, enhanced AI tools will be introduced in early 2026 to help streamline and speed up responses across all regional services.
Ward 1 Councillor, Pam Beach:
Durham Regional Road 8 remains closed until early December. Please plan your travel accordingly.
Highway 47 construction is now complete, except for some upcoming changes to the speed limit between Goodwood Road and Durham York Line.
Photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus on November 27 were a huge success. The event was well attended and everyone had a fantastic time.
The Holiday Trail will be hosting Santa and Mrs. Claus again on December 5 and 6. This is a perfect opportunity for families to meet Santa, take photos, and get into the holiday spirit. For more information about the event and other activities, visit www.discoveruxbridge.ca
As winter approaches, roads can become hazardous. Please drive carefully and adjust your speed according to weather conditions.
Make sure to catch the last Bruins game of the season on December 19. Santa may even make a special appearance, adding an extra touch of holiday cheer to the event.
We wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year 2026. May your holiday season be filled with joy, laughter, and wonderful memories with family and friends.
Ward 2 Councillor, Gord Shreeve:
Christmas in Uxbridge Township is an unforgettable experience! There’s so much to see and do whether you are shopping downtown or exploring the treasures of one of the beautiful hamlets. A highlight for me each year is the opportunity to participate in our amazing Santa Claus Parade. Seeing so many families from Ward 2 huddled together with donuts, hot chocolate and glowing smiles cheering on the creative floats warms the heart!
Two community events still to come are the Breakfasts with Santa hosted by the Sandford and Zephyr Community Associations. The festivities get started this Saturday morning November 29th at the Sandford Community Centre. The program includes a presentation by student dancers at 9:00 a.m., announcing the arrival of Santa. If you cannot make it to Sandford, there will be another opportunity to celebrate together with family and friends at the Zephyr Community Centre on Saturday December 6th at 8:00 a.m. Breakfast is $5 per person, with donations being received for the Loaves and Fishes Food Bank. At this time of year, I am especially grateful for the volunteers who contribute many hours of their time to help make events such as these successful.
The late, great Kenny Rogers lamented in one of his songs that “the Christmas star shines once a year and then it fades away.” But he didn’t leave it there. He continued by offering a solution for sharing the meaning of “Christmas Everyday”. Thank you, Ward 2 residents for all that you do to serve, and to demonstrate concern and support for your neighbours every day, year-round. 🎄❤️
Ward 3 Councillor, Zed Pickering:
As we approach the end of the year, I'd like to first say Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all those celebrating the season. As the magic of the Holidays grows, I am reminded just how special this time of year is in the Township of Uxbridge and how grateful I am for the spirit of collaboration that defines our community. Residents and staff continually share ideas and identify opportunities that help strengthen Uxbridge. Thank you to everyone who reaches out with suggestions. From bird diverters to protect aerial wildlife to signage reducing congestion and improving visibility in school zones, your ideas are valuable and being put into action.
I also want to extend special appreciation to the board members I worked closely with this year. We got a lot done. BIA, Library Board, Music Hall Board, Trails Advisory Committee, and Tourism Advisory Committee. Your volunteer contributions make a tremendous impact. And to the many other committees and boards supporting Uxbridge thank you for the time, insight, and care you bring to our shared community.
Uxbridge has plenty to enjoy this winter. Our historic downtown is perfect for seasonal shopping, with local boutiques and artisans offering unique finds and festive charm. It’s an easy way to support small businesses while checking off your holiday list.
If you’re craving fresh air, grab your snowshoes or winter boots and head to the trails. Winter brings a quiet beauty to our forests and open spaces, making it one of the best times to explore.
The Uxbridge Arena is buzzing all season with hockey games, figure skating events, public skates, and community programs—great options for families and fans alike.
And when you’re ready to warm up, settle into one of our outstanding restaurants or stop by a local brewery or cidery for something crafted close to home. Whether you spend the day shopping, skating, or snowshoeing, Uxbridge has plenty of ways to make winter enjoyable.
See you out there, Uxbridge.
Ward 4 Councillor, Willie Popp:
November was a busy month in Uxbridge! First, a big thank-you to everyone who came out for the Uxbridge Santa Claus Parade. We’re glad the weather held off, and the event was a success thanks to all the volunteers, organizers, and sponsors who helped bring the community together. Read further down for the float winners!
You may have also noticed new decorative lighting downtown. Thanks to the BIA for their hard work. The snowflake lights are now brightening the downtown core for the season, adding a festive touch for all residents and visitors. Be sure to shop local this holiday season and support our local businesses while enjoying the holiday spirit.
South Balsam Pond Update
Hydro-seeding around the pond has been completed, with additional seeding still to be done.
Pathway paving is scheduled to begin next. Concrete walkways at the site entrance will be poured last to prevent damage during site access. Winter protection will be provided as needed, and paving will proceed according to weather conditions.
This project has been in progress for an extended period, and I am pleased to note that we are now approaching its successful completion.
Ward 5 Councillor, Todd Snooks:

Snow Removal and Safety Reminders |
|
With the recent snow accumulation, we’d like to remind residents of a few important safety measures:
Sidewalks and Roofs:
All snow, slush, and ice must be cleared from sidewalks next to your property and from roofs overhanging sidewalks within 24 hours of snowfall. Hydrant Access:
The Region of Durham maintains fire hydrants, but they may not be cleared immediately after heavy snowfall. Take a moment to remove snow from around hydrants near your property. Keeping them visible and accessible can save firefighters valuable time in an emergency. Every second matters. Children’s Safety:
Please ensure children stay off or away from snowy roadsides. Play safely this winter and avoid roads when our crews are working. |

Family Services Durham: Breaking the Cycle of Abuse |
|
As part of our commitment to support the safety and well-being of Durham Region residents, Family Services Durham (FSD) offers services to those who engage in (or may be at risk of engaging in) behaviour that harms others, and to survivors of abuse.
The Partner Assault Response (PAR) Program
The PAR Program provides specialized group psychoeducation to adults of all genders who have been charged with intimate partner violence/domestic violence. Participants’ current/former partners are also offered support, assistance with safety planning, and service navigation.
Referrals to the PAR program are made by the Crown Attorney’s Office or Probation and Parole Officers.
The PAR program helps participants build accountability and learn non-abusive ways to manage conflict and difficult emotions. During 12 weekly group sessions, various topics are discussed including types and effects of abuse, beliefs and attitudes underlying harmful behaviour, impacts of substance use, and healthy relationships. The program creates a safe and supportive space through a trauma-informed approach and responsiveness to different cultural, social, geographic, and economic needs.
Sessions are held in-person or online. Fees are determined on a sliding scale.
For more information about the PAR program, call 905-668-4113 ext. 3661, email par_admin@durham.ca, or visit Domestic Violence - Region of Durham.
Men’s Counselling Link (MCL)
Men face unique challenges, so have unique needs. At the same time, stigma, gender stereotypes, and limited access to appropriate services can create barriers to seeking support.
To reduce this gap, Men’s Counselling Link (MCL) provides no-cost, confidential support to men age 16+ who want to explore change, repair relationships, and move forward with integrity. MCL is provided through 211 Ontario and Family Service Ontario, along with community agencies including FSD.
Men experiencing relationship challenges, stress, or intense emotions— or those simply striving to be the best partner or father they can be — can access judgment-free support to enhance well-being and build healthier relationships.
This service offers a focused counselling session, and in some cases a follow-up session. Service is offered in-person at various locations in Durham Region (including Uxbridge), or by phone or video.
For more information or to request MCL support, call or visit 211 Ontario.
The Older Adult Safety Advisor (OASA)
Along with the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS), FSD offers an Older Adult Safety Advisor (OASA) program to assist older adults who are experiencing abuse, neglect, fraud or other harm.
Information, support and service navigation is provided directly to those at risk, and to community members with a concern about an older adult.
OASA staff also work to increase awareness about elder abuse and local resources through community outreach, engagement, and education activities. Most recently, the OASA engaged with community members and partner organizations at the Uxbridge Active Living Fair, to share information and resources relevant to the needs of older residents.
For more information or to request services, contact the OASA at 905-668-7711 ext. 2460 or RMD. OlderAdultSafety@durham.ca.
Counselling and psychotherapy for survivors of abuse
FSD’s community counselling program offers individual, couple, and family counselling and psychotherapy to help survivors of any type of abuse achieve safety and heal. Fees are determined on a sliding scale to make services accessible.
Male identifying clients ages 16+ who have experienced sexual abuse/assault can access no-cost support at FSD via the provincially-funded Male Sexual Abuse Counselling (MSAC) program.
These services are offered in-person throughout Durham Region (including Uxbridge), or by phone or video.
For information about FSD’s community counselling or MSAC programs or to request service, please complete our Counselling Request Form or call 311 or 1-800 721-0622.
