Step 1: Bronze Medallion

Teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education – judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness. Lifesavers develop fitness and endurance in a timed swim.

Prerequisite: 13 yrs of age and/or Bronze Star

Step 2: Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid with CPR 'C'

Designed to challenge the lifesaver in a more advanced setting, this course teaches the difference between lifesaving and lifeguarding, the principles of emergency procedures and teamwork. Lifesavers learn how to rescue a spinal–injured victim as well as completing multiple victim rescues.

Prerequisite:  Bronze Medallion

NOTE: Emergency First Aid is required.  We offer the higher level of Standard First Aid with the course for your convenience.

Step 3: NEW! Assistant Instructors

Through classroom learning and in-water practice, the Lifesaving Society Assistant Instructor course prepares candidates to help instructors with swimming and lifesaving classes. Volunteering with lessons is part of the program.

Check back again for our next scheduled course!

Prerequisites: 14 years of age by end of course; Bronze Cross or higher certification

Step 4: Lifesaving Society 'Swim for Life' and 'Life Saving Instructor' course

The Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor course prepares the instructor to teach and evaluate the swimming strokes and related skills found in the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program. Candidates acquire proven teaching methods, planning skills, and a variety of stroke development drills and correction techniques.
The Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor course is designed to further develop instructional and leadership concepts, preparing instructors to teach the Canadian Swim Patrol, Bronze Medal awards and Emergency first aid as offered by the Lifesaving Society. Current course details may be found here.

Prerequisites: 15 years of age by end of course; Bronze Cross certification

Step 4: The National Lifeguard Award

This award builds on the fundamental principles taught in the previous lifesaving awards. Recognized as the standard of lifeguard performance in Canada, Lifesaving Society's National Lifeguard education is designed to develop a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgment and a mature and responsible attitude towards the role of a lifeguard.  Candidates should be prepared for the standard of fitness required for this level. Current course details may be found here.

Prerequisites:  Bronze Cross; must be 15 yrs. of age; a current Standard First aid course

Step 5: Maintenance

Recertification is required every two years to maintain active status:

NLS Recertification Course

Candidates should be prepared for new standards to be evaluated, including timed items.

Standard First Aid/CPR 'C' Course

Providing comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR, this course is for those who want an in-depth understanding of first aid including spinal injuries, medical/legal issues, heat or cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, abdominal and chest injuries as well as burns.  Including CPR 'C' certification and an introduction to the use of AEDs (Automated External Defibrillation), this course is recognized by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). Current course details may be found here.

Most of our programs are designed for a specific age group.  All participants must be of the required age as outlined in the guide as of the completion date of the program.

Registration Deadlines

Late registrations may be accepted provided space is available, but will not be pro-rated for remaining program length. Final registration deadline is one week following the commencement of the program.

Program Cancellations, Revisions and Refunds

Cancellations:

  • Should a program be cancelled, a full credit will be provided by the Recreation Department.

Program Revisions:

  • The Township of Uxbridge reserves the right to cancel or revise any program in accordance with participant requirements.

Refund Process:

  • Missed classes may not be made up at another class time or session. Please allow four weeks for the processing of refunds. Refunds will only be issued to the original registrant.

  • Requests for changes/transfers will be accepted prior to the start of the program and are conditional on class and space availability in the program.  A $15 administration fee may be applied to transfers and seven days notice is required. Frequently Asked Questions - Public Swimming

Admittance Policy

"Admission Standards for Public Pools" were developed by the Office of the Coroner of Ontario to assist Lifeguards in maintaining adequate surveillance over the whereabouts and the activities of young bathers while they are inside the pool enclosure. The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care strongly support these recommendations for the purpose of preventing injuries and fatalities.

  • Children aged 6 years and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian 12 years of age or older. The parent or guardian is responsible for direct supervision of the child, must be in the water and within arms reach of the child at all times.
  • Children aged 7 to 9 years who do not pass a facility swim test must be accompanied by a parent or guardian 12 years of age or older. The parent or guardian is responsible for direct supervision of the child and must remain in the water with the child.
  • Children aged 7 to 9 years who pass a facility swim test may be accompanied by a parent or guardian who remains in the pool enclosure (but not in the water) to provide supervision and maintain visual contact.
  • Children aged 10 years and older may swim without adult accompaniment.

Facility Swim Tests:

  • Shallow end: swimmers must be able to swim one (1) pool width, or have completed Swim Kids 3 or equivalent.
  • Deep end: swimmers must be able to swim two (2) pool widths or one (1) length of the pool successfully.
Assessment of Swim Level
Unsure what level your child is in? Uxpool offers free level assessments during any public swim to accurately tell you what swimming level you should register your child in.
Groups
Please book group swims with a supervisor well in advance to ensure there is adequate staff available. Entrance to public swim is on a first come-first served basis. Please arrive early to ensure your group has pool access together. Admittance policy must be adhered to.

Food and beverages are NOT permitted on the pool deck or in the change rooms. However, non-breakable water bottles are permitted.

Street Shoes
Street shoes are not permitted in the change rooms or on the pool deck.  It is highly recommended that you bring a change of shoes to enter those areas.
Diapers and Strollers

Uxpool has a universal co-ed change room suitable for families and special needs visitors, containing four individual change areas suitable for families or support staff.

Shower Before Swimming
A thorough shower before swimming helps keep the water clean and impurities to a minimum.
Code of Behaviour

The Township of Uxbridge endeavors to provide the highest level of safety and enjoyment to all participants and staff members for the duration of its leisure programs/aquatic lessons.  These guidelines have been developed to ensure that all involved are aware of acceptable behaviour.  Coarse language, bullying, vandalism, physical and aggressive behaviour will be recorded, reported and may result in the removal from the leisure program/aquatic lesson or facility.

Health and Safety Concerns
  • If a participant has a communicable disease (e.g. Chicken Pox, etc.) or a current public health concern we would ask that the participant not attend leisure programs, swimming lessons or public swimming. Participants are welcome to return to the leisure program/aquatic lesson when they are healthy.
  • Parents should be aware that the Child and Family Service Act requires that any suspicion of child abuse be reported immediately to the Children’s Aid Society.
  • Those with serious medical conditions should be accompanied by an individual who is knowledgeable of their condition.  Please notify staff on duty of your condition.

Cell Phones / Photography / Videos
  • Cell phones are to be turned off prior to entry into the change rooms, and must remain off for the duration while in the change room.
  • Pictures may be taken of your own child, however no other children may be included in the frame. Cell phones may be used as phones on the pool deck. Due to privacy laws, the use of cameras and video recorders must be arranged with the office supervisor prior to the event.
