Mayor Dave’s Q&A Video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuG3G1I6IIs&t=1s

This month, Mayor Dave shares highlights from his recent trip to the 2025 AMO Conference and discusses the exciting announcement about Uxbridge’s new Aquatic and Sports Complex.

Updates from Council

Mayor, Dave Barton:

I’d love to hear from you! If you have questions about local issues, upcoming events, or anything else on your mind, send them my way. Just email mayor@uxbridge.ca with the subject line "Mayor's Q&A." If your question is for a specific councillor, I'm happy to have them join the next video segment as well! I’ll be answering selected questions in a video next month. Looking forward to your submissions. Let’s keep the conversation going!

Regional Councillor, Bruce Garrod:

I was happy to join Mayor Barton and members of Uxbridge Council at the annual Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference in August.  Delegations with Provincial Ministries is, in my opinion, this most important element of the conference.  I focused on three priorities.  Specifically, I was pleased to update Natalia Kusendova-Bashta, Minister of Long-Term Care to thank her for the commitment to move forward with the 192-bed home in Uxbridge starting this November.  The second delegation was with Minister Jones of the Ministry of Health. She was pleased to take an action item to work with Infrastructure Ontario to accelerate the start of construction of our new hospital to align with Oak Valley Health’s plan. My third delegation was with Minister Trevor Jones of Ministries of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness where we discussed the importance of making it easier to get product to market as well as potential opportunities to reduce red-tape such as the types of licenses needed to move from field-to-field.

As we head back to the busy fall session of Regional Council, in my role as Vice Chair of the Durham Transit Executive Committee I’ll be taking quick action to protect our on-demand service that continues to see record utilization.  I’m also vice-chair of the Finance & Admin Committee which is working to complete the annual budget process by year end.

Finally, I want to extend a quick thank you to DRPS North Division for their increased presence in the Township, as well as their improved communication on social media. With more officers now patrolling 24/7 in all three North Durham communities, and the addition of newly hired graduates, I’m thankful that the long-awaited increase in visibility has finally arrived.

Ward 1 Councillor, Pam Beach:

Whether you’re hoping to declutter, enjoy some festive fun, or get into the holiday spirit, there is something for all ages to enjoy. Ward 2 Councillor, Gord Shreeve:

Thanks to the combined efforts of the members of the Zephyr Community Association and the Zephyr Lions Club, last Saturday's Family Fun Day was a wonderful success! Student volunteers did a great job setting up and supervising games, which participants loved. There were some very impressive antique tractors on display, courtesy of the Holtzheimer and Baker-Mathewson families. The Uxbridge Fire Department sent a truck to the park, which was a big hit. The two firefighters were great representatives, allowing kids to explore and learn more about their important work. Also stopping by for a visit was the Community Resource Officer from DRPS, who took the time to talk with parents and children — many of whom were very curious about police work and especially his vehicle! Another surprise visitor to the event was Jacob Mantle, MP for York-Durham. Thank you, Jacob, and assistant Mike, for taking the time to support this community event! The Lions hosted a delicious BBQ, and kids lined up for the $5 pony rides offered by the friendly staff from Zephyr's B&B Stables. The weather was lovely, and the event was truly a highlight of the summer of 2025.

In just a few weeks, on Sunday, September 14th, the Udora Leaskdale Lions Club will be hosting their Family Fun Day at the Udora Community Hall from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. For further information, please visit their Facebook page.

As summer winds down, residents will be happy to know that Township road construction work, including resurfacing, is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks on Zephyr Road, Foster Drive, and the Leaskdale subdivision. Also scheduled for final treatment are Concession 5 (Sandford to Davis), along with Fowlers and Kydd Roads.

As Ward 2 elementary students prepare to return to their schools, and others look forward to new adventures at secondary schools, colleges, and universities, I wish them and their families the very best for a safe and successful 2025–2026 school year.

Ward 3 Councillor, Zed Pickering:

UxPool remains a vital part of Ward 3 and the broader Uxbridge community. I learned to swim there and know that many others share fond memories and experiences at this cornerstone of our town. The rest of Council and I recognize the importance of keeping UxPool in its central location, ensuring future generations have the same opportunity to learn, grow, and connect in a space that has served our community for decades. On August 26, the Township of Uxbridge, alongside the Minister of Sport, MPP Peter Bethlenfalvy, Uxbridge Council, Township staff, and members of the community, proudly announced the new Aquatic and Sports Complex coming to the Uxbridge community. This exciting project is supported by a grant of over $7.7 million from the Province of Ontario.

The Uxbridge Public Library, originally built in 1887, has recently undergone significant restoration work to preserve its historic charm. This restoration is a celebration of Uxbridge's heritage, craftsmanship, and community spirit. The new clock hands look great, and the new chimes sound fantastic.

September is Local Food Month, and the Tourism team is excited to introduce Trail-icious. The Uxbridge Farmers’ Market, Fall Fair, and local businesses are participating in this wonderful celebration of local food and the incredible people who grow it. Visit discoveruxbridge.ca for more information and to discover other fun adventures happening right here in Uxbridge!

Back to school this month! As you're making your way through school zones or dropping off your little ones, please allow a bit of extra time and be mindful of street signs and pedestrian crossings. Also, remember to park in designated zones.

Ward 4 Councillor, Willie Popp:

It has been a busy month in Uxbridge.

I attended the Clock and Chimes Celebration at the Uxbridge Public Library, which marked the restoration of several key features. I also spoke with Global News about the project. You can watch the segment here. The event recognized important upgrades to a building that continues to serve as a central hub in our community.

I also had the opportunity to attend Autofest Nationals. It was a well-run event with a strong turnout, showcasing a wide range of vehicles and drawing visitors from across the region. I joined the cheque presentation, where organizers announced that $5,000 was raised for the Uxbridge Hospital Foundation. This kind of support makes a real difference and speaks to the ongoing commitment from the community and event partners.

The Uxbridge Downtown Revitalization Committee will be at the BIA Hut during the upcoming Fall Fair. Be sure to stop by for updates and information about downtown projects and upcoming plans.

The Uxbridge BIA newsletter has also been updated and relaunched. Visit www.uxbridge.ca/bia to subscribe and receive the latest on local events, business updates, and opportunities to get involved throughout the holiday season.

Lastly, a new trail crossing is being installed at Elgin Park Drive, connecting to the Countryside Preserve. This improvement will enhance safety in an area where sightlines and visibility are limited. The project is the result of efforts by our Trails Committee and Active Transportation Committee. We thank the dedicated volunteers whose input has helped guide these important improvements. The crosswalk is expected to be operational within the next week.

Ward 5 Councillor, Todd Snooks:

As Chair of Planning and Development this newsletter provides an excellent opportunity to ensure more residents are up to date and have knowledge of completed applications and public planning meetings that are happening in Uxbridge.  Please find the below details for one such meeting:

Playground Closure Status:

  • The unfortunate need to close most playgrounds in Uxbridge due to “the year of the sand wasp” was certainly felt by all and we thank residents for their understanding and patience as staff worked through this.  I am happy to announce that all playgrounds  have been reopened!

Heritage Uxbridge:

  • The Heritage Uxbridge committee has been working hard in the background in continuing to designate historical properties and it was a great step to be able to make that a reality for The Quaker House “Friend’s of Quaker Meeting Place”.  The process is not a simple one and involves a lot of parts and individuals.  Thank you to those involved and the leadership of staff member Jake Locke!

Pocket Forests at King Street:

  • Reminder that the tree planting for the King Street Parkette Pocket Forest is scheduled for October 25, 2025. Stay tuned for more information on how to register.

Scouting Awards Presentation:

  • I had the pleasure of joining Councillor Shreeve and Councillor Popp at the Uxbridge Scouting Awards Presentation on August 28th, celebrating the outstanding achievements of our local youth. Congratulations to all the award recipients! Pictured below with us are the award recipients, along with Amber Stefan from the Optimist Club of Uxbridge, proud sponsor of the 1st Uxbridge Scout Group.

Township Announces New Aquatic and Sports Complex

On Tuesday, August 26th, the Mayor and Members of Council for the Township of Uxbridge were joined by Minister of Sport Neil Lumsden, Minister of Finance and MPP for Pickering–Uxbridge Peter Bethlenfalvy, Township staff, and members of the community to announce a significant investment in our community's future.

The Province of Ontario has committed over $7.7 million in funding to support the construction of a new aquatic and sports facility in Uxbridge.

The new Uxbridge Aquatic Centre will replace North Durham’s only indoor pool with a modern facility that includes:

  • An eight-lane, 25-metre pool for swimming and fitness
  • A 10-by-15-metre therapy and teaching pool
  • A multi-sport space designed for basketball, pickleball, and fitness programming

This new facility will replace our aging pool and stands as one of the most important infrastructure projects in Uxbridge’s history. It will significantly enhance recreational opportunities, health, and wellness for residents across the region.

The Township extends its sincere thanks to the Ministry of Sport, MPP Bethlenfalvy, and Township staff for their support and commitment to delivering this transformational project for the community.

Clock and Chimes Celebration

On Wednesday, August 20th the Township, alongside Library Staff, celebrated the new improvements made to the Uxbridge Public Library clocktower. With brand new clock hands, and a fresh new set of clock chimes, the clocktower is restored to working condition, while preserving the history that has overlooked our residents since 1887.

If you find yourself taking a walk by the library to remark on this standout feature, take a look inside, where you can find the past mechanisms that once ticked and chimed for all of downtown Uxbridge to hear and see.
